PRAYER AND WORSHIP

 

ALTAR SERVERS - Adults and youth in the 4th grade or above to serve God by assisting the Presider during Mass by holding the candle while accompanying the Cross-bearer, holding the Sacramentary for the priest, helping at presentation of the gifts and throughout the Liturgy of the Eucharist. BIBLE STUDY - Read and study the Scripture and commentaries and share what you believe God is telling you in the sacred text. Meet Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm.  Contact: Rev. Everett Pearson 

CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP - Members meet to enter into conscious, loving communion with God and each other, offering prayers and songs of adoration, praise, repentance, joy, entreaty, supplication, petition, intercession and thanksgiving to share in the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the upbuilding of our Parish community. Meets Friday evenings at 7:30pm. Contact: Bea Neely

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD - Lead children through the Liturgy of the Word prayer experience during 10:30am Mass on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Sunday of each month during the School Year.  Contact: Elaine Hutchinson

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST - Assist with distribution of the Eucharist at Mass, cleaning vessels after Mass and take the Eucharist and prayer to the homebound. Must be Catholic in good standing and has received Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Ongoing training provided.  Contact: Stephanie Davis and Deacon Lawrence Miles

LECTORS - Proclaim the scripture readings at Sunday Mass and other liturgies throughout the year with reverence and understanding. Contact: Maurice A. Harris, Jr. and Deacon Lawrence Miles

LITURGY COMMITTEE - help Pastoral Team in planning for our worship, especially holidays and Holy days throughout the year. Contact: Rev. Evertett Pearson

USHERS (GREETERS/HOSPITALITY) - welcome parishioners with a warm smile and a greeting, pay special attention to visitors, select parishioners to carry gifts at offertory procession, pass baskets at collection time, provide information about Church and distribute bulletins.


PHYSICAL PLANT/PLANNING/FINANCE

 

CHURCH CLEANING TEAM - Help with general housekeeping chores in maintaining cleanliness of church. Meet on Saturday mornings after the 8:30am Mass.

FINANCE COUNCIL - Assist Pastor in managing the Parish financial resources. Work with Pastor and school Principal in preparing annual budget. CPA or experience in business and/or financial management. Contact: Rev. Everett Pearson


HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
- assist in fostering communication between school parents of Mount Calvary School and the Faculty and Administration, as well as develop, organize and execute fundraising activities to support the school. Contact: Sonya White

MAINTENANCE/GROUNDS/RENOVATIONS - assist in maintaining the physical plant when requested on as "as needed" basis. Skills in maintenance and repairs helpful.

MARKET DAY - monthly frozen food delivery service that is one of Mount Calvary Catholic Schools fundraising events and the school receives a 20% rebate of total sales. Helpers are needed to prepare orders, place food on tables for pick-up and assisting clients in finding the location of foods ordered. Usually 2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month. MONEY COUNTERS - help count and prepare weekend Mass offerings, donations and school fees for bank deposit. Contact: Fran McConnell at 301-735-5532 x 10.


OFFICE ASSISTANTS
- assist in preparing mailings, bulletin inserts, worship guides, catechetical resources and/or computer work - such as data entry, transcribing notes, layout and design. Receptionist skills helpful (telephone and door). Contact: Fran McConnell at 301-735-5532 x 10.


PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL
- twelve members elected by the parish community and three members appointed by the Pastor to provide wisdom and guidance in the governance of the Parish. Meets 3rd Monday of each month. Contact: Wanda Wilson

SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD - members chosen by the School Administrative team to help review school policy and provide input and new ideas. If interested, please call to volunteer. Meets every other month during school year. Contact: Principal 301-735-5262


SCHOOL FUNDRAISING

TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY BOARD - members meet to review Parish use of technology (computers,internet,etc) in order to make use of these tools to proclaim the gospel and do the work of our Parish community.

 

 

PEACE, JUSTICE AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

 

CARDINAL'S APPEAL COMMITTEE - plan and organize the annual Cardinal's Appeal at Mount Calvary Parish, encourage full participation through planning, publicity, tracking and reporting.

SOCIAL CONCERNS - motivate parishioners to reach out in service, justice, advocacy and solidarity. Work with committee to coordinate direct service projects at Mount Calvary. Merged with Planning for Future Committee. Contact: Pat Johnson and Maurice A. Harris, Jr.

BLOOD DRIVE - coordinate and set up, recruit volunteers and blood donors twice a year (September and February).

LEGISLATIVE NETWORK - send letters, faxes, emails and/or telephone calls to legislators on important Church issues. 

GABRIEL NETWORK
- Provide emotional and other support as needed to women seeking to bring their unborn child to birth, and provide continuing support to hem after the baby is born. Contact: Sonya White

LADIES OF CHARITY
- provide services for the poor, expressing passion and tactfulness as well as the ability to respect the confidentiality of clients who come for assistance. Mass and monthly meeting on first Tuesday of the Month. Collect canned foods and other non-perishable food items on specified Sunday each month. Contact: Judy Staudinger 301-735-5532 Ext. 12.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DAY - gather, sort and help Ladies of Charity provide food and toys to those in need before the Christmas Holiday. 


FOOD PANTRY
- help to pack food bags for those in our community in need. Pantry hourse are on Monday and Thursdays from 9:30 - 11:30am.


NURSING HOME
- visit at Millennium Nursing Home on Fridays each week.  Where Mass is offered at 11:00am, helpers need to arrive at 10:30am to assist in assembling residents. 


S.O.M.E. (SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT)
- prepare and serve breakfast once a month at SOME in downtown Washington DC at First and "O" St. NW. Carpool from front of church at 6:00am on Second Tuesday of each month. Return to church at 9:00am. Contact: Janyce Ferguson


WARM NIGHTS
 - prepare food for breakfast, lunch bags and dinner for 25 homeless people who will be housed in the school as our guests for one week during the Christmas Holiday.  Assist in providing a loving environment, serve meals, and socialize with our guests.  Contact: Bernadette Stradford
 

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE - facilitate parishioners understanding and practice of stewardship in all areas of their lives. Meets approximately. 4 times a year with assignments as needed.

 


COMMUNITY

 

SODALITY - participate in monthly Mass and meeting to grow in faith to honor our Blessed Mother and to support the parish and pastor.  Contact: Marilyn Salmon

YOUTH MINISTRY - provides high school age youth with programs and opportunities for spiritual growth through recreational, social and service activities. Contact: Michael Jackson

 

 

EVANGELIZATION AND FAITH FORMATION

 

CCD SUNDAY SCHOOL OF RELIGION - serve as Catechist (teacher of the faith) or classroom aid for children in grades Kindergarten through eight who do not attend Catholic Schools. Sunday mornings from 9:00 - 10:15 am. Contact: Cathy Ziegler 301-735-5262 Ext. 17


RCIA/RCIC
- facilitate the process of initiating new members (age 7 and above) into our Roman Catholic community of faith through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Sponsors also needed. Contact: Cathy Ziegler 301-735-5262 Ext. 17


SACRAMENT PREPARATION

INFANT BAPTISM - lead parents in discussion about their faith and the Rite of Baptism. Five sessions.  Contact: Cathy Ziegler 301-735-5262 Ext. 17

CONFIRMATION
- Director for Religious Formation in carryhing out the annual preparation program for seventh and eighth grade youth preparing to receive Confirmation during their eight grade year.  Assist in developing workshops and retreats. Contact: Cathy Ziegler 301-735-5262 Ext. 17
